Training as a Reader

We train Readers at our Gloucester, Hereford and Portsmouth centres. The course provides three essentials in preparing for ministry; a grounding in academic theology; training in ministerial skills; and engagement in the process of spiritual formation. Students study for a Certificate in Theology, Ministry and Mission over 2 or 3 years on the Durham University Common Awards Programme.

Study takes place on one evening a week during three 10-week terms, two residential weekends per year, plus further opportunities throughout the year to reflect on vocation and ministry. These elements are supported by independent learning, reflection and practice in home parishes.

Study

We welcome people to the course who aren't confident about coming back to study, and we have an opening module. 'Preparing to Learn', which covers study skills and helps you find the resources best suited to you. We also have people who provide one to one support for people who are starting to study again.

Our Readers and part-time ordinands study together which is a key strength of training with us. This in itself is great preparation for collaborative ministry in the future as we learn to appreciate each other's different vocations and ministries.

Where will I Train

Weekends and week-long residentials take place at Cuddesdon with evening teaching at either of the two following locations, whichever is most convenient for you:

Gloucester: study evenings take place on a Thursday at St Mary de Crypt, Gloucester.

Ludlow: study evenings take place on a Wednesday at Ludlow Mascall Centre, Lower Galdeford, Ludlow.
