Revd Dr Buki Fatona
Buki has a Doctor of Philosophy in Science and Religion from the University of Oxford. Her doctoral research brings together her degrees in Microbiology (BSc); Theology (BA); and Epistemology, Ethics, Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science (MSc). In her thesis, via the lens of contemporary cognitive neuroscience, she critiques scientific and theological accounts of memory and future-directed thinking in antiquity (Aristotle’s) and in the Middle Ages (Augustine’s and Thomas Aquinas’). Buki is a council member and Publicity Officer for the European Society for the Study of Science and Theology.
Her teaching experience includes a visiting lectureship at University of Chester, a research fellowship and tutorship at St Augustine’s College of Theology and an associate lectureship at the University of Durham. At St Augustine’s, she was part of a team that obtained a grant from ECLAS (Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science). Buki, as Project Manager, oversaw the College’s curriculum-wide delivery of their science-engaged theology programme. She remains on the University of Oxford’s tuition lists in both the Faculties of Philosophy, and Theology and Religion.
She despises, speaks out against, and tries to mitigate societal injustices particularly in relation to minoritised groups. Until recently, she was co-President of the Wolfson College Feminist Society at Oxford. As a representative on the Faculty’s Equality and Diversity committee, Buki helped organise the University’s inaugural Women in Theology colloquium, celebrating the invaluable and continued contributions of women to the study of theology and religion.
Buki is ordained to the priesthood in the Church of England. She is serving a curacy in London Diocese and has a Permission to Officiate in Oxford Diocese. Prior to her ordination, and during her training, she served as Assistant Chaplain at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. In her spare time, she enjoys running, yoga, music, and art.
