Bishop David Wilcox, Principal of Ripon College Cuddesdon 1977-1985. RIP.

10th December 2025

It is with sadness that we note the death of Bishop David peacefully at home on 8th December 2025. David’s contribution to the life of Cuddesdon was significant, coming to the role of Principal at a critical period soon after the merger of Ripon Hall with Cuddesdon College in 1975. As such, he was hugely influential in discerning the vocation and setting the ethos of the new institution. He brought with him significant experience as a theological educator both in the UK and India. Subsequent to his time in Cuddesdon he was a popular suffragan bishop of Dorking in the diocese of Guildford – both there and at Cuddesdon he had at different times oversight responsibility for bishop Humphrey, who has good and personal cause to be thankful for his kind, wise and gentle ministry. It was a great joy to us to be able to confer an Honorary Cuddesdon Fellowship on Bishop David in 2021, the last time he visited the college. We extend our sympathy to Pam, holding her, together with Pete, Chris and their families, in our prayers. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
